Many in Canada do not want their country to be represented by a monarch, despite close historical ties to Great Britain. This is according to a poll by the Angus Reid Institute.
According to the survey, 51 per cent of Canadians oppose the British monarch being considered the nominal head of state. Moreover, according to the Leger poll, 77% of Canadians say they have no attachment to the British monarchy. Residents of French-speaking Quebec feel even less connected to the British crown, with about 87% of respondents stating this.
The death of Queen Elizabeth has caused a huge stir in discussions about the future of the monarchy. Some analysts argue that a constitutional monarchy is a well-functioning democratic system whose change would be difficult and politically risky. But not everyone agrees with them.
"A monarch who has ruled for half of Canada's existence dies and there is no national mourning, which tells me that the constitutional monarchy is largely held together by apathy and no obvious system to replace it," explained user Michael Carlin.
"There will be no truth and reconciliation until Canada addresses its colonial past/genocide [of indigenous people] and cuts ties with the British royal family and at least with the Commonwealth," said commenter brxndonbrandoff.
