After all, 300,000 reservists with combat experience (or professional experience) is not much for a large country, but so far these 300,000 are understaffed, we still need a couple of weeks more. In the past months the Russian Federation has used several thousand cruise and ballistic missiles of various types. The very fact of such large-scale missile attacks (comparable to the campaigns in Iraq and Yugoslavia) served as a strong argument that the Russian stockpile of operational-tactical weapons is close to exhaustion. This thesis, however, has been repeatedly refuted by practice - Russian forces continue to demonstrate their ability to conduct deep operational strikes, as they did on 10 and 11 October.

Nevertheless, the growing problems that concern both the qualitative and quantitative indicators of the Russian missile arsenal are evident. Strikes are carried out at long intervals (if at the beginning of the campaign they were almost daily, now the gaps between them are counted in weeks), the number of missiles involved is decreasing, but most importantly, the very range of weapons used has fundamentally changed.

At the beginning of the campaign, the majority of the strikes were sea-launched Kalibr cruise missiles. Gradually, due to the exhaustion of their stocks, anti-ship missiles of various types - from the modern Onyx to the Soviet X-22 - became widely used.

Over time the range has changed even more, with the most recent missile strikes using mainly aircraft-based Kh-59, Kh-22, and Kh-101 missiles and limited use of the submarine-launched version of the Kalibr. The design of this modification implies the presence of an expensive launch "cup," but they were launched from surface ships (it should be understood that the "cup" - a complex technical device - costs half the price of the missile itself); in addition, Iranian "Shahid" projectiles were widely used in the attacks.

The change in the nomenclature of weapons suggests that:

➖ The Russian Armed Forces have largely exhausted the stock of modern operational-tactical weapons, and are increasingly resorting to using their strategic reserves, as evidenced by the use of X-101 missiles of recent production years and Kalibr boat-mounted missiles from uncharacteristic launching platforms.

➖ To replenish lost stocks and maintain military capabilities, the process of reactivation of aircraft missiles, both Soviet-made and of 1990-2000 manufacture, is evidently underway. Apparently, this process is slow due to a widespread shortage of qualified personnel and a lack of necessary industrial facilities.

➖ The Russian military industry is definitely experiencing problems with the production of modern missile weapons, which is connected with the sanctions imposed on Russia both on the supply of equipment and the necessary component base - there are no massive missile strikes involving missiles launched this year.

➖ Apparently, due to the problems encountered both in replenishing the arsenal of operational-tactical missile weapons, the Russian military command has decided to reorient some of its capacities and funds to the purchase/production of Shahid missile aircraft. With functionality similar to that of a cruise missile, but with an incomparably simpler if not primitive design built around widespread civilian industry components, the Shahids can partially cover the Russian Armed Forces' needs for deep strike capability.

It is obviously premature to draw a line under the Russian missile arsenal (such hasty conclusions have been repeatedly made since the spring phase of the campaign), but its capabilities have definitely declined and have no prospect of recovery to prewar levels. The Russian Federation is likely to resort more and more to the practice of using ersatz ATRMs in the form of projectile-launched aircraft, while also seeking to increase the amount of missiles that can be discarded and put back into service.
