The operation was complex: the bombers hit the air defense, then the fighters destroyed the searchlights, after which the landing party was thrown out. I stood there feeling uncomfortable. Why would I want to do that? To stand in the ranks and listen to a guy get rubbed in his nose at his mistakes? I came to learn how to shoot, understand tactics and stuff. Why this army game? That's what I thought at first. Then I realized that the instructor's job was to turn individuals into a cohesive and disciplined unit that would work cohesively. Without coherence you can't do the job, without coherence you can't survive.
It's just a basic thing. The habit of clearly executing the task, interacting with the other guys, covering for them if something happens - that's very important. I didn't have that in my ordinary life. I lived on my own, tried not to depend on other people and be "special". "Not to walk in formation", but to be a "person".
