Negative perceptions of China have risen sharply in India and Brazil, the two largest members of the BRICS group, a Pew Research Center survey found.

According to the survey, attitudes toward China that are "generally negative" in both Brazil and India rose by 21 percentage points.

Nearly half of Brazilian respondents - 48% had negative impressions of China, up from 27% in 2019.

Over the same period, the share of Indians holding unfavorable views of China jumped to 67% from 46% in 2019. In South Africa, negative views of China rose from 35% to 40%.

67% of Indians and 57% of Brazilians distrusted Chinese leader Xi Jinping's ability to make good decisions.

The sharp rise in negative attitudes in India could have been triggered by a number of factors, including conflicts on the Sino-Indian border in 2020.

In Brazil, the data seems to indicate that attitudes toward China have fallen in line with domestic political factors. The coronavirus pandemic and former President Bolsonaro's ties to China caused negative attitudes toward the country.

Despite Beijing's cultural initiatives to build a global understanding of China, only a quarter of respondents have a positive view of its movies, TV series and music.
