🇦🇺 The first flight of the STRIX UAV from BAE Systems Australia has been delayed
BAE Systems Australia's ambitious project to develop an unusual vertical take-off and landing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), STRIX, has reportedly passed a Critical design review. However, the first flight of the Strix has been delayed because the company had to make "changes to some key elements of the platform compared to the model presented at the Avalon International Airshow and DSEI London."
STRIX can fit into a standard shipping container and can function not only as a strike weapon carrier, but also as a reconnaissance and surveillance platform. It will be able to carry AGM-114 Hellfire, Brimstone and AGM-179 Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM). It will also carry the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) II missile and the advanced Razer munition.
STRIX was expected to make its maiden flight in late 2023, with the drone entering service in 2026. However, the first flight has now been pushed back to "the first half of 2024."
A full-scale mockup of the STRIX on display at the Defense and Security Equipment International (DSEI) exhibition in London was surrounded by a huge array of strike weapons (pictured).
