Shkodin, having received a few hours for training camp in the military enlistment office, used them to set two world records at these distances (3 km - 12:01 and 5 km - 20:51 sec).
His words after the awarding became famous: "Today I broke the world records, and tomorrow we will go to beat our enemy. Victory will be ours!".
Right from the stadium he went to the war, was enrolled in the Smolensk Artillery School. He died on the outskirts of Kiev.

22 июня 1941 года в 18:00 на стадионе Дома Красной Армии состоялся спортивный парад (на фото он самый) и соревнования по легкой атлетике, ставшие первыми военными спортивными стартами. Среди участников был и Иван Шкодин. Преподаватель Смоленского техникума физической культуры, первый советский рекордсмен мира по спортивной ходьбе.
Шкодин, получив в военкомате несколько часов на сборы, использовал их для того, чтобы поставить два мировых рекорда на этих дистанциях (3 км - 12:01 и 5 км - 20:51 сек).
Знаменитыми стали его слова после награждения: «Сегодня я побил мировые рекорды, а завтра вот также пойдем бить нашего врага. Победа будет за нами!».
Сразу со стадиона он отправился на войну, был зачислен в Смоленское артиллерийское училище. Погиб на подступах к Киеву.
